Glutenfree glamping in the Ardennes

July 2019 we spent a week in the Ardennes. Three nights in the rustic village of Sy, in Belgium. From there we drove of to Liefrange, a tiny, remote place in Luxembourg. Seemingly a place with only 53 inhabitants! (yes, apparently that’s possible, it was so quite there, I couldn’t resist doing some research 😉).

Glutenfree Glamping Ardennes

We stayed for 3 nights at Camping Village Sy in the Belgium Ardennes, in a Safari, or so called, Glamping tent. I wouldn’t call it ‘Glamping’, but it felt defenitely more comfortable then a regular tent. Meaning those you need to set up from scratch, with air mattresses, surrounded with a wet and boggy lawn. And wel, since our furry friend Ted was also joining us, this did not feel like the best option to me.

This tent was fully furnished, actually it offered space up to a familly/group of 6, containing 2 bunkbeds and one double bed. There was a small kitchen but no running water. So glutenfree cooking was certainly possible, just remember that you stil need to do some running yourself ;-). Above all, the joint, large veranda really created that typical, outdoorsy feeling. The campsite itself was quite basic but well-maintained. What attracted me the most about this glamping was the location. Situated In the middle of a beautiful nature reserve and the Ourthe River right next to your tentdoor truly was kind of amazing.

Ultimate relaxation during Glamping

If you’re looking for peace and quiet, this is the place. We didn’t even have internet reception at our glamping tent. Completely in tune with nature in the Ardennes, you could say. Unfortunately, it was raining that day, so we took our car and took off to the picturesque town of Durbuy. The smallest town in the Ardennes and even from Belgium.

Nice to wander around or have a ‘pint’ on the terrace, as Belgians say so beautifully. There are mainly tourist shops or shops selling local products. I scored a jar of soy-based chocolate spread, thought I’d give it a try and it did not dissapoint. Because there are not so many shops in the area, make sure to bring your own glutenfree products. Restaurants in this area unfortunately, are also not really prepared yet for glutenfree guests. Ofcourse they offer alternatives like salads or glutenfree dishes containing meat/fish with rice or potatoes, but be sure to know what you order.

What to do in the Ardennes?

Rafting, mountain biking, hiking, possibiities for outdoor and nature lovers are endless in the Ardennes. If you fancy canoeing, keep in mind that waterlevels here are often low, during summer. Because of this canoeing is not always possible. Besides this there F are also some beautiful hiking trails to follow. If you start from Sy, you can head off from the little church and walk along the banks of the Ourthe to the ruins of the Logne Castle.

Along the way, you’ll be surprised with a beautiful viewpoint over the valley. The total route is 7 km, with quite a few narrow paths, so make sure to wear your hiking shoes and bring enough water.

All togheter, this is a beautiful area to visit. It’s easy to combine while also visiting the south of holland or for example Luxemburg. All directions are only a 2 – 3 hours drive. And also if you’re from Holland, the Ardennes make you feel completely away from home if you just visit for a weekend.

Personnaly I prefer some variety during my trips. So after 2 nights in Sy, we drove to our next destination. The Luxembourg Ardennes. Here, I found another original accommodation. You’ll read more about this here.
