As for the last years, Slovenia became one of the most popular holiday countries in Europe. The least I heard about it, when visiting this beautiful place the first time in 2015, the more I hear about it today. To me this is absolutely no surprise! Slovenia is a true pearl, which has been passed by for too long.
Slovenia is a small country, sparsely populated and mostly green. A result of the heavy rainfal during the entire year. Although it’s a small country, as a traveller you won’t feel bored here. Mountains, vasty lakes, wild rivers and enormous forest area’s, nature of Slovenia is definetely something else!

4x Must visit – Nature of Slovenia
1. Soča river
Not meaning to exaggerate, but in my opinion this is the most beautiful, clear, wild river I have seen in all of Europe. Nature of Slovenia, and especially it’s rivers and lakes, is magical. There are places to go rafting or canyoning. But also a simple picknick can be wonderful, mesmerizing the incredible scenery. Are you interested in kayaking or some other water activities, and really experience the nature of Slovenia? Check this out!
Tip: going for a picknick at the riverside? Keep in mind that moscito’s and wasps also really fancy this place 😉
2. Vintgar Gorge
Through this impressive gorge, flows a river of about 1,6 km, ending in a beautiful waterfall. The path crossing the gorge consists of wooden bridges and small, rocky paths. When the sunlight shines through the gaps of the high rockformations, the water gets a unique green colour. Therefor alone I consider this place a must visit when exploring the nature of Slovenia.
Tip: get up early and visit the gorge in the morning, or at the end of the afternoon to skip the crowds. Ofcourse lowseason is always better. Or just book your tickets in advance, you can do this here. Wear some proper hiking shoes and bring enough water and/or food, cause it’s not available on route.
3. Bohinj Lake – nature in Slovenia
A little less familiar then Bled lake, but at least as pretty and besides that, much more quite. At this giant lake, surrounded by mountains and trees, you can go for a swim, fishing (in some parts) canoeing or supping.
Tip: want to save some money? most accommodations in Bohinj area are cheaper, compared with the accommodations around Bled lake. We stayed at this beautiful hotel, located directly next to the lake. This hotel offers a large breakfast buffet, including vegan and dairyfree options.
4. Bled Lake
Ofcourse while exploring the nature of Slovenia, Bled Lake for sure can’t be skipped. This small town is build around a magical, turquoise-coloured lake, surrounded with lots of high trees and a small island in the middle of the lake. Because Bled lake is situated within the Julian Alphs, it’s often foggy, what makes the scenerey even more mystical. Especially at night! In Bled you wil find several good restaurants, you can take a small boat to visit the island or go up the hill and visit Bled Castle. The view from here is spectacular at any time.
Just 20 minutes from Bled you’ll find another pitoresk town called Radovlijica. This traditional Slovenian hotel offers home made dishes, prepared with local products and is definetely worth a visit.
Tip: If you feel more comfortable cooking our own meals, while experiencing the beautiful nature of Slovenia, book this cute appartment. With your own kitchen, you can easily prepare dietary proof meals just the way you like it. And still enjoy the nature of Slovenia, from the comfort of your own balcony or garden.
